Die in Buch II gemachte Definition der Seele bereitet aber nun mehrere Probleme: Zum einen ist es der Charakter der "Vorlesungsnotizen", der ein Nachvollziehen der Beweisstruktur erschwert. Dabei soll durch Rückgriffe, auf anderen Orts getroffene Bestimmungen, das Verständnis des Textes erleichtert werden. Zum anderen gibt es in Buch II mindestens zwei verschiedene Ansätze zu einer Definition der Seele. Deren Ansprüche und Funktionen werden untersucht und falls möglich in einen gemeinsamen Zusammenhang gestellt.
Eines der berühmtesten Probleme in Aristoteles De Anima ist die Umschreibung der Seele, mit Hilfe des Begriffs der "próte entelécheia".
